Independent village has children's fancy dress parade 7th Oct 2008

A charity event saw villagers declaring their independence from the rest of the country and setting up their own government while visitors were treated to a children's fancy dress parade.
The Oxford Mail has reported on the ingenious idea which began life way back in 1987 in the village of Wolvercote.
Anyone attempting to leave the village on the day of the fete was greeted be a border control and a sign which read: "Stop - you are now leaving Britain."
Despite sounding a bit ominous, the event was meant to be a fun way to raise money for charity and visitors got to enjoy a grand prix pram race and a fun run that 90 took part in.
A pet show, fishing contest, an arts and music festival and a tug-of-war were just some of the other events put on to entertain the troupes.
During the event, which lasted two days, passports were issued to 6,000 people and the state's so-called Prime Minister, Peter Hands, of Godstow Road, told the Oxford Mail: It was a total village effort and everyone had a good time. There was something for everyone. People have been asking if we can do it again."
