Hundreds join campaign to save local panto 25th Sep 2008

A large number of people have joined a newspaper's campaign to save a local pantomime.
The Harrow Observer is fighting to stop the annual Pinner Pantomime Evening from being scrapped because local traders are claimed to be too hard up to fund it.
According to the paper, the traders are blaming the credit crunch for their lack of cash.
As such, the event may not take place this year, meaning the thousands of people who annually attend it will be left disappointed.
"Traditionally the evening sees about 500 children sing carols and dance in the streets. Shops decorate windows and staff wear fancy dress. Families and friends enjoy fairground rides and the many other attractions, including a Santa's grotto," the paper reported.
However, since the Observer launched a group on social networking site Facebook last week to try and save the pantomime, which was due to take place on November 27th, over 150 people have joined up.
Speaking to the newspaper about the panto, Children's Laureate Michael Rosen said: "The Pinner panto is part of the life of the locality, bringing pleasure and goodwill to hundreds of children in the area.
"With the constant presence of television and computer-based entertainment, children today get very little chance to see and take part in live entertainment."
