Locals get changed into fairytale fancy dress to celebrate the Little Mermaid 26th Aug 2008
Copenhagen, home of the famous statue of the Little Mermaid, celebrated the 95th birthday of the sculpture when locals changed into fairytale fancy dress, CCTV reported.
They all formed the number 95 when they jumped into the harbour near the statue that commemorates the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen.
Carl Jacobsen, founder of the Carlsberg brewery, had the statue built in 1909 after he had seen the dancer Ellen Price perform a ballet of the Little Mermaid.
A visitor to the fancy dress event said: "It's like your childhood dream. We have heard of Hans Christian Andersen. We read and we've read the stories of the Little Mermaid and so it's inspired us."
There was also a Hans Christian Anderson fairytale parade and musical performances for visitors to enjoy.
The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen was first published in 1837.
