Heat was too much for carnival queens 30th Jul 2008
Spending two hours of waving at crowds wearing traditional and elaborate fairytale dresses took its toll on two young carnival queens over the weekend.
The Manchester Evening News reports that both 17-year-old Emma Alexander and 14-year-old Rebecca Irvine found the 30 degree heat too much as they took part in the Castleton Carnival.
Both girls had to be taken to hospital in full princess dress due to heat exhaustion, the newspaper states.
However, despite the problems with the heat, carnival queens' organiser Rachel Anderton - Rebecca's mum - claimed the event was still a great success.
"The fancy dress was outstanding," she said. "I'm very grateful to the people on the floats, but I'd like to see more floats next year and more local people involved."
Next year will be the 33rd annual parade in Castleton, which is in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. It is around eight miles (12.9 km) from the centre of the city.
